Speaking English Slowly: Why It Doesn’t Mean Your English Is Bad
Many people feel that speaking English only counts when it is fast, smooth and almost automatic. If they need time to build a sentence, look for a word or stop for a moment, they immediately think that their English is not good enough. But speaking slowly is still speaking. When you speak in your own language, you do not have to think about every word. You can react quickly, change your sentence in the middle and explain exactly what you mean. In English, your brain may need more time. You are choosing vocabulary, checking grammar and thinking about pronunciation, often while also worrying about how you sound. Of course this can make you slower. It does not mean that you cannot speak English. It means that you are doing something difficult in a language that is not your first one.
